Legends of Zork Press release

Author: Renex | Filed under: General, Interviews

You are standing in an open field west of a white house. Or maybe you’re not? Maybe you’re sitting inside a blue house? Or a greenhouse? You could be in an internet café, or maybe you’re just checking your email during the commercial break of your favourite show? Wherever you are, as long as you have an Internet connection, you could be playing Legends of Zork™.

Legends of Zork

Legends of Zork

With the fall of the Great Underground Empire chaos seems to be gaining the upper hand. Kobolds, trolls, and every dangerous creature imaginable (and occasionally an unimaginable one) have been growing bolder and creeping further from their lairs. Conflict is spreading through the land, mayhem abounds, and the dreaded words on everyones lips are “Recession” and “Redundancy”. Yep, the economy’s gone down the tubes, and you’ve been sacked from FrobozzCo International. But don’t feel bad, everyone else has too. So why sit around moping about your pension when you could be out adventuring? With so much money to be made from cutting your way through hordes of monsters, you’ll never need to worry about your finances again! And if you’re not a very good adventurer, or you run into a grue… well, at least your pension won’t be an issue anymore.

That’s right, 30 years after its first conception, Zork™ is back! After much hype, confusion and then hype again, Legends of Zork™ has finished its testing period, and has now been released to run wild and free on the internet at www.legendsofzork.com

“We’ve designed LoZ to be as accessible as possible, hoping to appeal to both original Zork fans (and there’s enough of them working on this that we should know what we’re talking about), while also trying to bring in a whole new generation of players”, said Dylan Collins, CEO of Jolt Online Gaming, “We appreciate that Zork™ is a hallowed franchise, and we have tried our very best to keep within the spirit of the game and pay it the reverence it deserves, while also making some obvious changes to open it up to a wider audience”. He continued, “We don’t know if this approach will make us the most celebrated company in the world, or if we’ve just earned ourselves a whole lot of hate mail, but whatever the result, that’s the balance we’ve tried to strike. We’ve also made it as accessible as possible in a very literal sense, in that we’ve designed it to be played in your Internet browser, at home, in school, in the office. Personally I can’t imagine a better use of a smartphone than to thrash a giant Kobold while on my exercise bike at the gym”.

For more information, game announcements, and of course to try the game yourself, please go to www.legendsofzork.com.

In fact, you should immediately stop reading this and go to www.youtube.com/ns2game, the official YouTube NationStates 2 channel”.

Already hundreds of players have logged their vote for the best video on the NationStates 2 YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/ns2game. Join up now at www.nationstates2.com to see if you have what it takes to make your nation address to the world.

NationStates 2 is a sequel to NationStates, one of the most popular browser games on the Internet. NS2 launched in public beta early in Nov 2008. Since then it has been a huge success with tens of thousands of nations already created. SocialBrowserGames.com: Why do we like browser games?

Author: Renex | Filed under: Uncategorized

Millions of people play persistent browser based games (PBBG). If you are reading this article right now you are probably one of them. Why do you like to play this games? What do they have special?

BBG Social Network

BBG Social Network

I will try to answer this question from my perspective. I have been playing browser games for over 8 years and have seen hundreds. Some had wonderful graphics, but others were poor in this field. It is curios that not always the game with the best graphics had the most players.

There were other games with very interesting features but again there were simpler games that had more players. Why?

It is hard to take a general conclusion, but I believe the most interesting part about browser games is the community. This spider web called internet logs you trough PBBGs with thousands, hundreds of thousands of people across the entire world. Different cultures, religions, beliefs come and meet in wonderful places where everyone has the same status. There is no king nor slave. There are only players which can be your friends or enemies, but even if they are your enemies they are only in the game not in real life.

We believe in the power of community and of social networks. We believe that games are strongly related to this and that is why we have designed a new social network for game creators, players and alliances.

SocialBrowserGames / BBGSocial ( www.socialbrowsergames.com ) is a network were we want the players to create their profile across all the games they play, keep a blog, connect to groups of their favorite games and of their alliances/clans within this games.

SocialBrowserGames.com has the most important features web2.0 provides.

As a member of SocialBrowserGames you can:

- build your profile and share it with your friends

- keep the data from the games you play

- have a network of your friends from all the games

- note important things and create your online agenda which you can have as private, public or share with your friends

- create pages

- keep a blog with everything you have to say

- join groups: games, alliances, clans and discuss with your friends, allies, even with game creators

- build a wish list which you can share with your friends and view their wish lists

- keep track of the most important events from your life with the Event Calendar

- bookmark any page from the site

- export trough RSS any data you want from your sub-site

- import and export data using OpenDD (Open Data Definition) which let’s you transfer data between social networks

- invite your friends with a special Contact Importer which gives you the posibility to invite from over 50 e-mail servers and social networks

- create photo albums with you, your family, your friends etc.

- posibility to login using OpenID

- get OpenSocial widgets (if game creators implement some code on their games this can be played directly from the network).

Even more, alliances benefit of all this features + the option to create their public and private site groups for FREE.

Games can be played directly from the network using OpenSocial or OpenDD. Of course this requires a bit of coding by game programmers.

SocialBrowserGames has all this and much more, but best of all is that it is 100% FREE.

You are invited to signup and try it for yourself:

One day, the Humans that inhabited the nearby town of Crystallion were visited by a Dark Wanderer. His name was Krelon. A wicked, decrepit scientist who practiced the Dark Arts and intermingled those practices with his experiments. It was because of these experiments that he had been cast out of every town he visited. For Krelon believed that by tapping into the immense Plasma Energies found in the blood of the living, he could find a way to cheat death. So he went from town to town, hoping one day to find the right method for achieving his goal.

But finally, after much chastising by the townsfolk, he found his perfect lab rat. A Nobleman known as Delvagan who was cruel and wanted nothing more than absolute power. With the promise of everlasting life, he invited Krelon to his castle to begin the process.

Delvagan was introduced to me as the creator of Crimson Moon. Crimson Moon is a free web based fantasy Persistent Browser-Based RPG Game (PBBG) featuring Vampires, Werewolves, and Hybrids.

Crimson Moon has won several times the contest of top games on BBGUniverse.com and this week features an interview with the creator of this wonderful game.

Crimson Moon

Crimson Moon

Q: Please tell us a few things about yourself.

A: Been working on CM for 5 years. Have a degree in Computer Information Systems and hold a full time job in networking.

Q: Could you describe Crimson Moon and point out 3 special things about it?

A: Crimson Moon is a Browser Based Game also called a PBBG that centers around the world of vampires and werewolves as well as a hybrid of the species. In Crimson Moon a war has broken out that involves all 3 and players can choose to do battle in pvp combat, join clans, make friends, join tournaments, marry and much more. Crimson Moon has 3 unique servers. The 1st server does not require you to level to increase stats. So you have 2 types of players. Those that level sit and those that choose to level. Server 2 requires leveling and increasing stats is only done through leveling. Server 2 also incorporates the areas of the game into a grid based mapping system. The Battle Server is a tournmaent style sever that goes in phases allowing a fresh start at the end of each phase. The focus is purely PvP fight on this sever. Server 1 is the oldest and original version of the game.

Q: What was the most interesting part in the development process and why?

A: Getting to create a world that others could enjoy and have fun with. I also at the time was learning the language CM was created with so it was excited learning a new programming language at the same time.

Q: Do you have a team or you work solely?

A: As far as programming goes I do it all. I have no team. This sometimes causes issues in that I’m not able to release updates as fast as I’d like but I’ve yet to find the need to bring others on board for programming. The reason I don’t have to yet is that I have a wonderful group of staff and players that take time out of their day to assist me with many of the game issues so that I can focus on coding the game when I have time.

Q: Could you describe a comic happening you had in the game?

A: I remember one year for April Fool’s I thought it’d be funny to post a message the game was being shut down…..that didn’t go so well:(

Q: What relation do you have with your players? What features do you have for community?

A: As the sole owner of the game it’s sometimes hard to have that commrodry with my players but I try my best. As with anything large I read all mail but don’t always have time to reply to them all. I do listen to my players in things related to the game as they are the one’s playing it. As far as communtiy goes I’ve implemented many things such as forums, chats. Even new social networking tools such as blogs, profiles, and profile comments similar to what you might see on a social networking site.

Q: How do you use to advertise the game?

A: I use many of the vote ranking sites but also have a budget set aside for advertising on various ad networks.

Q: What plans do you have for the future of the game?

A: Basically I’ll keep adding content and new upcoming features as time allows. The BBG gaming world is changing every day as more and more sites are brough online. As well you see the big players starting to release game since they’ve noticed the desire for these games. Only time will tell what will happen with CM and other games like it.

Q: Do you run any other projects?

A: I do work on several other sites for various things. I also run a game topsite called Crimson Games found at http://crimsongames200.com. As well I recently purchased another online game and am in the process of recoding it and hope to release it soon. I’ll post more on this on Crimson Moon and my company site http://crimsonproductionsllc.com

Q: What do you consider to be the most interesting part in a BBG?

A: I think the draw is the community and the fun of the game. Sometimes games are so caught up in how they look you miss out on the aspect that got us all involved in the first place.

Q: BBGUniverse plans to run a social network for both players and creators where game creators can create blogs, pages, groups for the players of the game and players can create groups for alliances. Would you be interested in joining Crimson Moon on such a project?

A: I’m always looking to increase the viewing that Crimson Moon has on the net. So, yes I would look at it.

Q: Do you have any message for your players and for possible future players?

A: Thanks for sticking with us for all these years. We look forward to being around for many more years and will continue to improve upon the game as need!

Q: Any message for game creators?

A: Have fun…if you not having fun it’s not worth it.

Q: Would you like to add anything else?

A: Just a thanks to BBG UNIVERSE for providing this interview and I look forward to a growing partnership between our sites. Crimson Moon can be found at http://cmrpg.net

Dublin, Ireland. 14th January 2009. Jolt Online Gaming today announced that it will be publishing Legends of Zork TM, which will give players the chance to once again take up the mantle of Zork TM, this time via an Internet browser.

Legends of Zork

Legends of Zork

“The Great Underground Empire has recently fallen and the land is in disarray. The Royal Treasury has been sacked. The stock market has collapsed, leading even mighty FrobozzCo International to fire employees from throughout its subsidiaries. A craze of treasure-hunting has swept through the remnants of the Great Underground Empire. The New Zork Times reports that trolls, kobolds and other dangerous creatures are venturing far from their lairs. Adventurers and monsters are increasingly coming into conflict over areas rich with loot. It’s a dangerous time to be a newly-unemployed traveling salesman, but it’s also a great time to try a bit of adventuring.”

LegendsofZork.com will provide online gamers with a persistent online adventure, playable from any Internet browser. Players take up the role of a recently laid-off salesman and part-time loot-gatherer, as he explores the Great Underground Empire. Designed to provide gamers with a casual MMO game they can play on their laptop, desktop or Apple iPhone (in school, work or on the bus), there’s nothing to download, just go to www.legendsofzork.com.

“As a complete Zork geek, I’m very proud to be releasing this title”, stated Dylan Collins, CEO of Jolt Online gaming. “Anyone who plays MMOs will definitely like to spend some time with Legends of Zork while they’re taking a break or browsing around the web. It’s very addictive”.

eRepublik is about changing the course of history in a huge virtual society. As a citizen in this New World of 63,500 you have the power to make a difference and fulfill your economic, political or military goals like never possible before.” This is what states on the game page. Erepublik became gold this autumn and it has over 60.000 thousands players after less than 2 years since it is online. We had the priviledge of an interview with Alexis Bonte , co-founder of Erepublik.

Q: Please introduce yourself. How did eRepublik change your life?
A: I began my professional career in the pharmaceutical industry with CPH Pharma. In Internet, I was part of the team that built lastminute.com, and I become Managing Director for the group in Italy.
After the sale of lastminute.com I became a business angel for different projects. Currently, I am the CEO of eRepublik.com, a company which I founded with George Lemnaru, and I am a board member at: SEII, CPH Pharma, Farmacia y Salud, Fitnesskit.com, Trilulilu.ro (where I am also the non-executive chairman), Tevin.ro as well as at Centrofarm.ro and GeneralCom both publicly listed at the Bucharest Stock Exchange. eRepublik changed my life in that Ihave very little time for other stuff but it is worth it.

Q: How would you describe the game?
A: eRepublik, is a mirror version of the real world where users follow their political, economic or military aspirations to change the course of history. In eRepublik citizens can live out their dreams, interact with friends and meet new ones as they navigate their new world.

Q: There are hundreds of browser games created by people from the entire world. Is eRepublik special? Why?
A: eRepublik is special because there is no artificial intelligence. Everything is based on human interaction.
eRepublik is built around the concept of a daily social experience and has an advantage over other strategy games, because it demands a very small fraction of users’ free time (about 15 minutes), while providing them a much deeper experience for that time than anything available at the moment.

Q: Who had the idea to create the game and how did the story of eRepublik begin?
A: The game was born, based on an idea from co Founder George Lemnaru, after a long conversation we had when we met in Bucharest about a year and a half ago. George’s idea was to develop and economic strategy game but we ended by adding tons of things!
I ended up buying shares in Tevin Solutions, the company George founded, and we created eRepublik Labs in order to develop the game.

Q: Creating a browser game requires a lot of involvement and there are good and bad things that happen.Could you describe a positive and then a negative experience you had in the game?

A: When you are not a big company, a big developer, is not easy to find the means to set a project in motion. You have to get money, people… But if you fight for it, there is always a way out, an option.
In the case of eRepublik, the initial investment for production of the beta version of eRepublik was €200,000. During 2008 an additional total of €550,000 was invested for the development of Version 1 by the French venture capital firm AGF Private Equity, as well as by several Business Angels with broad Internet experience.

Q: eRepublik is a game based on community. In several interviews you have declared that the community is the one that develops the game all the time. What relationship do you have with your players?
A: eRepublik has been developed by a team of 25 people in Spain and Romania. During its beta phase, we received a lot help from volunteers and received input from many active citizens who have provided their comments and ideas. For me, this feedback is essential because they, the citizens, are the ones who really know the game. For example, now that we have launched V1 (the public version), we have counted on the help of our community to find and solve bugs, add features, improve things that they didn’t like. Thus enhancing the players’ experience.

Q: What do you like the most of this relationship? Could you list some positive and some negative things from the experience with your players?
A: For example, the fact that users create the majority of the content also makes the world inside the game grow rapidly. There are thousands of companies employing real people and thousand of independent newspapers.
We have carried out meetings in Spain and in Romania with users, and it is very rewarding in terms of the feedback received from users regarding the different aspects of the game. You can exchange ideas, opinions… and it is very positive.
I can mention one thing which is not really bad but that shows the high level of implication our citizens have with the game. They are so involved that if they do not like something new they will chase you all around with messages and emails in order to prove their point!!!

Q: What means eRepublik now? (if you could tell some things from the present of the game)
A: Today, eRepublik has over 60.000 citizens all over the world. This means over 60,000 real people who enter the game at least once a day for an average of 15 minutes.

Q: Did the financial crisis affect eRepublik? Does it happen inside the world you have created?
A: The economy of eRepublik was affected during the transition to the V1. The creation of raw materials and their industries required some adaptation and created some level of confusion at the beginning, but players were up to the task and they overcame all the troubles. That and wars have reactivated eRepublik’s economy a great deal
Talking about real life, it is obvious that if people have no money, they can’t buy eRepublik gold, for example. But we have not noticed any ill effects of the crisis in eRepublik this is probably due to the fact that you don’t have to buy gold to do well and if you do it is quite a small spend.

Q: What plans do you have for the future of the game? (It would be interesting if you could provide a spotlight on the future development).
A: Now, we have finished the launch of the V1, so we have to improve things. We will continue developing new features and possibilities.

Q:You have over 60,000 players and you are still in beta. How much did you invest in the game and what advertising methods do you use? Do you have any sponsors?

A: Actually, we are not in beta, we launched the public version, or V1, of eRepublik back in October. And we don’t have any sponsor. Over 95% of the eRepublik world has been created by its citizens; its social based game play allows it to spread virally in terms of content and users, with almost no distribution and development costs. Our citizens are our best sponsors.

Q: Do you run any other project? If yes, Could you tell us a few words about them?
A: eRepublik is my only executive role I’m either an investor or board member in other projects. The main internet one would be trilulilu.ro the leading video, audio and images streaming community in Romania.

Q: Please speak to your players and possible future players. What would you like to tell them?
A: I would like to say that eRepublik is more than a multiplayer online game. eRepublik is a mirror of the real world: in the game, citizens can live out their dreams, interact with friends and meet new ones as they navigate their new world. We want to revolutionize the way strategy games are created, distributed and played by leveraging the power of communities and the Internet.
eRepublik is perfect for strategy games fans, videogame players, bloggers, members of online social networks and various online gaming communities, and also for Ex-videogame players who want something new, for people who have the money but do not have the time to play the online games currently available.

Q: Do you have any message for developers that would like to create browser games?
A: My message is: if you have a dream, fight for it in order to make it real. Maybe you don’t have the money, the time or the people of a big game developing studio, but the Internet is full of possibilities.
Now, social networks bring us a new world to explore. All you have to do is work and don’t give up.

Q: Would you like to add anything else?
A: Thanks for your interest in eRepublik

2008 - 2009

Author: Renex | Filed under: General

At the end or at the beginning of a new year it is used to remember what went good and what went wrong in the past year.
Ragarding BBG Universe I would have to say a few things.

BBG Universe was born in September. In the period of 3 months from when it became online a few things have happened.

We have implied in various projects, helped and were helped in different forms. 27 games joined and trusted our services and over 3000 people are visiting BBGUniverse, between 50 and 100 each day.

In October we joined BBGameZone in their “PBBG contest” project as a sponsor. The competition has ended at the beginning of January. I will write more in an upcoming article.

Second we now have an important partner. With BBGameZone and buildingbrowsergames we have created the PBBG Network. The aim is to provide the best content we can, every site in it’s field.
buildingbrowsergames acts as the blog of the network, BBGameZone as the forums and BBGUniverse as Top List and News Portal.

We are looking now for future partnerships and have some projects undergoing.

Today we will start a series of Interviews with games creators. You will see articles from succesful games and not so succesful games, game creators, programmers, project leaders on big gaming development studios. Some titles you will see on this series are: Erepublik, Travian, Crimson Moon, etc.

Second we plan to create a social network for games, players and alliances. Users can create groups, forums, pages, upload files, create photo albums and much more. Game creators and alliances will be able to use it as the public or private groups/sites/portal for their games/alliances.

One thing we have learned from the past is that people want to read content about PBBG’s and we promiss to try to bring you the best content. We plan to have at least 1 article on the blog every week.

This being said we would like to thank you for staying with us and we hope you will enjoy BBGUniverse even further.

PBBG Contest: Roshambeaux

Author: Renex | Filed under: PBBG Contest

My name is Jake Gostylo and I have been making games as a hobby for about 10 years.  I was on a team that completed an RPG for the Mac.  I started working on a game that was to be a 3d descendant of Scorched Earth before that game was shelved.  I always stuck my nose up at the browser as a platform until I decided I wanted to create a low tech MMO and realized browser was the way to go.  So I made TerraTanks (www.terratanks.com).  I learned a lot doing that project and it plugged me into the PBBG community which is how I found out about this contest.

I approached this contest with some veteran wisdom.  I know that the biggest mistake people make when trying to create a game is they overestimate how much they can get done in a certain amount of time.  I knew I needed to keep the scope of my game to a manageable size.  I decided to go with a game that I had designed just a week before.

I have not decided on a title, but for the sake of this article I will call it Roshambeaux.

I came up with the design for Roshambeaux as a way to make an RPG style dueling game using a standard 52 card deck.  I had to change some of the rules of the game to make the feature set more manageable, but basically the game is still in tact and can be played with a normal deck of cards.  The game is played by using the cards to set up a play area similar to a board, as well as drawing cards to use in the match.

One big reason I chose to do this game is that it was technically and conceptually challenging to create a browser game that required players to be playing simultaneously.  Because the way this game is played is not really geared towards how a browser normally works I decided I would use a framework instead of doing everything by hand.  I am hoping this helps me get it put together faster.  I chose Symfony because it looked like the most complete solution using PHP.  So my first task was to learn how to use Symfony.  I had faith that the time lost learning this framework would pay off in the end.

Currently I feel like I am on schedule to get the game finished by the deadline.  Despite the performance penalty of using Symfony on a shared host, I feel that it was definitely worth using.  I have a lot of the game interaction coded out and working.  Unfortunately it really needs to be almost done to give a demonstration.  I still need art desperately and I am hoping that there is a Symfony plugin for a lounge that I can use because it would really help if I did not have to make one myself.

PBBG Contest: Moonstone-RPG

Author: Renex | Filed under: PBBG Contest

The game is a classic fantasy RPG. The core gameplay is simple. You go and explore the dungeon where you find treasures, fight monsters and discover stairs to the lower levels of the dungeon. You get experience and gold from battles, once you level up you distrubute attribute points to make yourself stronger, you also need to heal yourself. Nothing surprising here.

The unique twist are items, resistances and variety of monsters. The upper levels of the dungeon are simple and easy, but the further you go the more complicated it gets. For example starting at level 5 you can meet a dragon, which is very nasty to fight unless you have fire resistance. To get fire resistance you can simply go to the town’s shop and but a proper ring. The deeper you go the more resistances you need while the amount of equipment slots stays limited. Soon you will strive for more powerful items which grant 2 or more resistances which are not easy or cheap to get. The item management starts to become more complicated and more fun then.

In the future versions the will be separate themed locations (like Ice Palace where you stumble upon cold type monsters only), travelling merchants who sell unique and rare items, predefined artifact treasures to find, speciments to eat (upon killing the dragon there will be a chance of a Dragon’s Heart drop which can be made into a resistance potion in the town’s alchemist), quests from the king, NPC, etc.

At the moment the game is under development, first playable version should be ready on 11 December, you can play it here: http://www.moonstone-rpg.com
